The city of Macapá is located in Brazil's Northern Region and it is the capital of Amapá state. The city was founded first around a fortress named Forte de São José do Macapá in 1688. More settlers arrived from the Azores in 1751 to defend region from French, English and Dutch invasions. African slaves were brought later to carry on building the fort.
